Why Till Receipts Fade & How to Store Thermal Paper Rolls

A customer returns with a blank receipt. A warranty claim fails because the docket faded. Or the printer jams every lunch rush. Most thermal paper problems are not faulty rolls — they are heat, light, friction and poor storage. This guide explains why till receipts fade and how to store 57mm and 80mm rolls so they print sharp.

1. How Thermal Printing Works (60-Second Version)

Thermal paper has a heat-sensitive coating. The print head heats tiny dots that turn black — no ink or ribbon. That is why prints are sharp and fast, but also why the same heat, UV light and chemicals that create the image can destroy it later. Fading is chemistry continuing after the sale.

2. The 5 Causes of Fading

Heat. Rolls or printed dockets left near grills, pie warmers, sunny windows or car dashboards darken then fade. Even 40–50°C accelerates the reaction.
UV and fluorescent light. Display dockets pinned under bright counter lights fade in weeks. Archive copies belong in a drawer, not on the wall.
Oils, sanitisers and plasticisers. Cooking oil, sunscreen, hand sanitiser and soft-PVC sleeves migrate into the coating and bleach print. Kitchen dockets in PVC ticket holders are classic victims.
Friction. Receipts rubbing in a crowded till drawer or wallet abrade the coating. Fold printed-side-in, not printed-side-out.
Wrong paper for the printer. A 57mm roll forced into an 80mm printer (or oversize diameter jamming the lid) causes uneven head contact and faint, patchy print that looks like fading but is mechanical.

Keep-For-Tax Rule

Australian businesses often need readable records for years. For anything that must survive — supplier invoices paid at the counter, warranty dockets — photograph or scan the thermal receipt the same week and file digitally. Store the paper original cool, dark and dry as backup.

3. How to Store Bulk Rolls (57mm & 80mm)

A 50-roll carton lasts most single-till cafes 2–4 months, so storage conditions decide print quality for the whole carton:

Cool and dry: under 25°C, moderate humidity. Storeroom shelf, not above the oven or beside the dishwasher.
Dark: keep rolls in the sealed carton until needed. Do not display spare rolls on a sunny back counter.
Original wrap: leave the foil/plastic wrap on until loading. It blocks light, dust and kitchen grease.
Upright, not crushed: store rolls on end, lids closed. Crushed edges jam printers.
Away from chemicals: separate from cleaning sprays, oils and PVC films.

4. Fix Faint Print and Jams

Clean the print head monthly in greasy kitchens — built-up residue is the most common cause of gradual fading print. And confirm size before bulk ordering: 80×80mm for counter POS, 57×38mm compact or 57×57mm larger 57mm capacity.
